Toompea Hill, or Upper Town, is a 20-meters limestone hill in the center of Tallinn. It's also famous as a Church Hill due to many churches located here: Alexander Nevskii orthodox cathedral, St.Mary's cathedral, and many others. Toompea Hill has some observation decks with the most beautiful views of Tallinn.
The fascinating walls of the old town remind us of the middle ages. The numerous towers each have their own history and the unique name. The most famous of those are "Paks Margareeta" ( Fat Margaret ), Kiek in de Kök ( look into the kitchen ), Tower behind the tower and many others.
The white tower of St. Olaf's church is the most recognizable landmark of Tallinn. The 123 meter high spire is still the highest structure in the town (except for the TV tower). It's the most popular observation spot of the city. The church is frequently used for the concerts.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral stands out from the old town buildings with its bright color and Byzantine architecture. It's one of the latest constructions of the old city, build by the request of Russian Emperor Alexander the 3rd in the 1900. It's located on the high point of the Toompea Hill in front of the Parliament building.
Pikk Street is the longest street in Tallinn. It was developed in the Middle Ages as the main road of the city. Along the street there are many interesting houses with colorful facades - they are the former warehouses- together with cozy cafes, shops, and art galleries.
The Dome Church is one of the oldest churches of Tallinn. The church looks very simple with the white walls and small dome, but it has the very long history. It was first mentioned in 1233 and since than it has been one of town's main temples. It's dedicated to Virgin Mary.
Town Hall Square has served as a market place since the 13th century when it became the center of the Lower Town. Today it is a venue for different open concerts and festivals in the summertime as well as in winter a famous Christmas market takes place here.
Stout Margaret Tower is known as a Fat Margaret Tower because of its appearance. This is the most massive part of the town's defensive wall that was constructed not only for protection purposes but also with a desire to impress the visitors of Tallinn.
Raeapteek (Town Hall Pharmacy) is one of the oldest continuously running pharmacies in Europe, having always been in business in this same house since the early 15th century. It is also the oldest commercial enterprise and the oldest medical establishment in Tallinn. It's located next to the Town Hall and still preserves the charming medieval spirit.
