One of most popular places in Klaipėda‘s old town is The Theatre Square. There is a sculpture of Ann from Tharau in the middle of the fountain at the center of the square. The monument is dedicated to Simon Dach, a German poet of Klaipeda origin. Another notable building is the Drama Theatre. Since the 18th century, the theatre has played an important role in the cultural life of Klaipėda.

It’s very famous for the large collection of wooden sculptures by various artists is displayed on the Hill of Witches. Most of the figures are based on Lithuanian legends or folk tales.

Cormorant and Herons Colony

The Curonian Spit has plenty of wildlife. The legend is that herons have nested near Juodkrantė since 17th century, but the cormorants arrived only at the beginning of 19th century. The colony consists of about 2000 pairs of the large great cormorant and about 500 pairs of grey heron. The special observation spot allows watching the life of the colony without disturbing birds. Please note there are about 50 steep steps to get to the observation spot.

We will start our tour on a ferry, crossing the Curonian Lagoon until we reach the Curonian Spit itself. Being a 98-km long stretch of land, it mainly consists of sandy beaches which split European continent from the Baltic Sea. Locals adore Curonian sceneries because of romantic sceneries of pine woods, which are an important part of Baltic nature. The scientists believe that Curonian Spit has been formed around 6000 years ago because of the sand accumulation in waters near the coast. Years later, fishermen have built their settlements here and in the 21st century those have become some kind of SPA resorts.

The next stop of the tour is Juodkrante, where the Hill of Witches is located. There, you will be able to visit the wooden statues of local heroes, including Nida - the resort of serene beauty. Nida is called the Lithuanian Sahara because of its 50-metres high dunes formed in the 19th century. Thomas Mann, a famous German writer, constructed his summer house in this region and now it is a museum dedicated to the author.

Back way to the port of Klaipeda. En-route you’ll make a photo-stop in the heart of Old Town - Theatre Square with "Ann from Tharaw" fountain and drama theatre. Here you will get to know about the old town of Klaipėda, street layout features, architecture and history.
